リアルタイムで聴いた時期によって、そのバンドのイメージというのは、たぶん固定されるのだろう。
また、ある年代の人たちは（私も含めて）、ＬＰジャケットからくるイメージやタイトルによって、その音楽の想像力を掻き立てられたものだ。まさに１枚の絵画を見るように、ファンタジーな世界（非日常）へ誘われたものだ。初期のジェネシスは、まさにそれを地で行ったようなバンドだった。
僕がジェネシスと初めて出会ったのは「月影の騎士（邦題）」である。本題は「ポンドによって売られてゆく英国」と皮肉たっぷりな（政治的な）タイトルである。当時の英国における慢性的な不況のことを考えると（ショキングではあったが）、タイムリーなタイトルだったとも言える。
その音楽性はというと（邦題のイメージにマッチした）、とても物語的でファンタジーなものに聴こえた。ピーター・ガブリエルの狂言まわし（演劇）的な表現とメンバーの演奏力がちょうどバランスのとれた傑作である。
ピンク・フロイド、イエス、ＥＬ＆Ｐが大上段に構えた客観的な表現だったのに対して、ジェネシスには一人の人間の視座に立った世界が展開されていたように思えた。半ば脅迫的な観念に囚われたピーター・ガブリエルの世界そのものだったのかもしれない。
とにもかくにも、僕は、その奇異な格好とキング・クリムゾンに影響されたであろう構成力に深くハマッテ行った。
８０年代に入るとラジオなどで頻繁に流れるポップスターというイメージしかないジェネシス。そんな僕にとってのベストテイクは、ナサリークライム＝「奇怪骨董音楽箱（邦題）」（しかし、うまくつけた邦題というか何というか）です。
因みに、フォクスロットは（英国の文学的背景と土壌が解からないと）ちょっと難解。トレパスは演奏力が楽曲について行っていないので、とても残念な作品。
あとは、最初のライブアルバムと「月影の騎士」「幻惑のブロードウェイ」、そして各ファースト・ソロ・アルバムがイイ！ また、２枚目ライブのフィルのヴォーカルも捨てがたいので、一聴を！ |
