キング・クリムゾンのヴォーカリストだったグレッグ・レイクの後釜に、青年ブライアン・フェリーはオーディションを受けるチャンスを得る。その後の経緯は良くわからないが、それに失敗したフェリーは、ＥＧの薦めもあり、旧友のアンディ･マッケイ、マッケイの友人ブライアン･イーノ、オーディションを受けたフィル･マンザネラなどを加え、１９７２年にニュー・グループを結成することとなった。 　音楽性も「ピート･シンフィールドがプロデュースするフィフティーズ」、その名も｢ロキシー･ミュージック｣。極めて斬新なスタイルでデビューすることとなった。デビュー・シングル｢ヴァージニア･プレーン｣は全英３位を記録した。 　そして、イーノの脱退、エディ･ジョプソンの参加、ジョン･ウェットンのゲスト参加などがあるが、基本的にはフェリー、アンディ、フィルの超個性がぶつかり合いながら奏でる絶妙なハーモニーの歴史とでも形容できるだろう。 　ロキシーの音楽性には２パターンあり、ひとつはアバンギャルドとロックンロールが見事に融合したダンサンブルな曲、もう一つは｢西方浄土｣とでも言おうか、祈りに近いヨーロッパ哀愁とに分かれる。 　ところで、その作品の源泉は（一説によると）、フェリーの恋愛遍歴の賜物らしい？「彼の貴族階級に対する執拗なコンプレックス、それは彼の恋愛対象に向けられ、失恋し、アイデンティティを確認、作品制作」といったパターンだそうだ。そう言われると、うなずけるものがあるから、そこがまた、たまらない。 　それはそうとして、ロキシーはその後のロック史(ニュー･ウェーブなど)に一つの潮流を創ったことだけは間違いない。 　お勧めは、１〜５枚目までと｢アヴァロン｣。フェリーのソロは１〜３枚目。フィルは｢クワイエット・サン｣を含めプログレ･ファンにはマスト。アンディの１枚目は隠れた名盤だ！
